案山子 (Kakashi)
The One Who Stands Still and Knows Everything
The One Who Stands Still and Knows Everything
In Japan, a scarecrow is called Kakashi (案山子). Traditionally, it stands quietly in a rice field, protecting crops from birds and animals.
The word Kakashi is believed to originate from Kagashi, meaning something that produces a smell. Farmers once burned unpleasant-smelling materials to keep animals away. Over time, scarecrows took human form.
But Japanese mythology gives Kakashi a deeper meaning.
In the ancient Kojiki, a scarecrow deity named Kuebiko (久延毘古) appears. Although he cannot walk, he possesses knowledge of everything under heaven.
Think about that.
He cannot travel, yet he knows the world.
He does not speak loudly, chase opportunities, or demand attention. He simply stands, observes, and understands.
In business and life, we often confuse movement with progress and activity with intelligence.
But wisdom does not always come from doing more.
Sometimes, those who stand still, listen carefully, and observe patiently understand more than those constantly rushing around.
You do not have to go everywhere to understand the world. Sometimes, wisdom comes from knowing where to stand.
