それがいい — Be the One They Want

それがいい — Be the One They Want

Japanese has two expressions that sound almost the same:

それがいい — “That is what I want.”
それでいい — “That will do.”

Only one character changes: が becomes で. But the difference can be enormous.

Imagine a customer choosing a product, a company hiring someone, or a person choosing a partner.

You do not want them to say, “それでいい — I guess this will do.”

You want to hear, “それがいい — That is the one I want.”

The first is acceptance. The second is preference.

This is an important lesson in business and in life. Being good enough may keep you in the game, but being wanted makes you valuable.

Do not simply try to meet the minimum requirements. Give people a reason to choose you when other choices are available.

There will always be alternatives.

The goal is not to become something people can accept.

Become something they choose.

Don’t aim for 「それでいい」.

Be 「それがいい」.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.
