自転車操業 — Keep Pedaling or Fall
In Japanese, there is an expression called “Jitensha Sōgyō” (自転車操業), literally meaning “bicycle operation.”
A bicycle stays upright as long as you keep moving. Stop pedaling, and eventually you fall.
In business, 自転車操業 describes a company that must constantly generate new cash just to pay today’s bills. Money comes in and immediately goes out. There is little reserve, little breathing room, and stopping is not an option.
It usually has a negative meaning. But many entrepreneurs know this feeling, especially in the early years of a business.
You sell because you need cash.
You collect because payroll is coming.
You finish one project because another must begin.
You collect because payroll is coming.
You finish one project because another must begin.
The danger is confusing movement with progress.
Pedaling harder may keep you from falling, but it does not necessarily take you where you want to go.
Sometimes the most important goal in business is not to pedal faster.
It is to build enough stability so that you can finally choose where to ride.
