予感 (Yokan) — Something Is Coming
In Japanese, 予感 (yokan) means a feeling that something is about to happen.
The kanji 予 means “beforehand” or “in advance,” while 感 means “feeling” or “sense.” Together, they describe sensing something before it actually happens.
A yokan is not necessarily good or bad.
嫌な予感がする (iyana yokan ga suru) means, “I have a bad feeling.”
But you can also have a feeling that something good is coming, or that someone you just met will become important in your life.
There may be no evidence. You may not even be able to explain why you feel it.
As we gain experience, however, we begin to notice small things without consciously thinking about them—a change in someone’s voice, an unusual expression, a shift in the atmosphere, or a pattern we have seen before.
Perhaps 予感 is not the ability to see the future.
It is the ability to notice the present before our mind fully understands it.
Something is coming.
You just don’t know what it is yet.
