Hanzōmon — The Ninja Hidden in Tokyo’s Subway Map
Millions of people ride Tokyo’s Hanzōmon Line (半蔵門線) every day. But have you ever wondered whose name “Hanzō” was?
半蔵門 literally means “Hanzō’s Gate.”
The gate stood on the western side of Edo Castle and took its name from Hattori Hanzō Masanari (服部半蔵正成), one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s trusted samurai retainers.
Today, Hattori Hanzō is often described as a legendary ninja. Historically, however, he was a samurai commander from Iga who became strongly associated with the Iga warriors—men famous for the skills and traditions that later became associated with ninja.
Hanzō and his men were connected with the defense of Edo Castle’s western approach. Hanzōmon opened toward the Kōshū Kaidō (甲州街道), leading west toward Kōfu and traditionally associated with an emergency route out of Edo.
More than 400 years later, his name is still everywhere.
When you board the Hanzōmon Line, you are riding a subway named after an Edo Castle gate—and that gate carries the name of one of Japan’s most famous figures associated with the ninja tradition.
Tokyo’s history is not only underground.
Sometimes the history itself is the name of the train.
