Ryoma Sakamoto → Kameyama Shachu → Kaientai

Ryoma Sakamoto is remembered as one of the great visionaries of Japan’s final years under the Tokugawa shogunate. But he can also be viewed as an early entrepreneur.

Around 1865, Sakamoto and his associates established Kameyama Shachu in Nagasaki.

It was not simply a political organization. It engaged in shipping, trade, and commerce, using business to support its activities. Because of this, Kameyama Shachu is sometimes described as one of Japan’s earliest trading companies.

In 1867, Kameyama Shachu evolved into Kaientai, with support from the Tosa domain.

There is a lesson here for modern business.

Sakamoto did not begin by building a large, perfect organization. He gathered people, started with what he had, did real business, and changed the organization as its opportunities and purpose grew.

In today’s language, Kameyama Shachu might be called a startup, with Kaientai representing its next stage of growth.

You do not always need to have everything figured out before you begin.

Start small. Take action. Adapt. Grow.

More than 150 years later, Ryoma Sakamoto still offers a valuable piece of Japanese Wisdom for entrepreneurs.
