YAM — The Network Behind the Mongol Empire
Why did the Mongols conquer such an enormous part of the world?
Why did the Mongols conquer such an enormous part of the world?
Most people think of horses, bows, and powerful warriors. But another important reason was communication.
The Mongol Empire developed a relay communication system known as the Yam.
Along major routes were relay stations supplied with fresh horses, food, and shelter. A messenger could ride quickly to the next station, change horses, and continue without waiting for his horse to recover.
Instead of asking one horse and rider to travel an impossible distance, the Mongols created a network.
This allowed military orders, intelligence, and government information to travel across enormous distances remarkably quickly for the time.
The wisdom of the Yam is still relevant today.
A strong organization is not simply a collection of talented people. Information must move quickly between them.
The Mongols understood more than 700 years ago that speed of communication can become a competitive advantage.
Today we have email, smartphones, cloud systems, and AI. But having technology does not guarantee good communication.
The lesson of the Yam is simple:
The organization that moves information fastest can often move faster than its competition.
