Japanese Buddhist Wisdom: 諸行無常 — Everything Changes

The Buddhist expression 諸行無常 (shogyō mujō) teaches that all things formed through causes and conditions are impermanent. Everything changes.

We see it in the seasons, in our bodies, and in the people and places around us. Yet we often expect the things we depend on to remain the same.

In business, a successful product can become outdated. A trusted customer may leave. A method that worked for decades may no longer meet today’s needs.

We may understand change intellectually and still resist it emotionally.

諸行無常 reminds us that success is never a permanent possession. It requires attention, care, and a willingness to adapt.

But impermanence also offers hope. Difficult circumstances can change. A failure does not have to define the rest of your life. What seems impossible today may become possible as conditions evolve.

This teaching encourages us to appreciate what we have while recognizing that we cannot hold everything in place.

Thank the people who support you. Enjoy the ordinary moments. Keep learning, even when business is going well.

We cannot make life stand still. We can pay attention to how it changes—and respond with greater wisdom.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.
