営業中・準備中 Open or Closed?

営業中・準備中
Open or Closed?
When you walk past a restaurant in Japan, you may see a sign that says:

営業中(えいぎょうちゅう)— Open for Business

But when the restaurant is not serving customers, the sign may not say “Closed.”

Instead, it often says:

準備中(じゅんびちゅう)— Preparing

This is a small difference in language, but I think it reflects something interesting about Japanese thinking.

“Closed” sounds final. The business is not available. Come back later.

“Preparing,” however, describes what is happening behind the closed door. The restaurant may be cleaning, preparing ingredients, setting tables, or getting ready for the next service.

The customer cannot enter, but the business has not stopped.

It is preparing.

I like this expression because it can also describe life and business.

Sometimes we are not ready to show results. From the outside, it may look as though nothing is happening.

But that does not necessarily mean we are closed.

We may simply be 準備中.

Planning. Learning. Building. Improving. Getting ready for what comes next.

Not every quiet period is inactivity.

Sometimes the most important work happens while the sign says:

準備中 — Preparing.
