臨機応変 — Adapt to Changing Circumstances
臨機応変 (Rinki Ōhen) means adapting appropriately to the situation at hand.
A plan may have been perfect when it was created. But time passes. The environment changes. Technology changes. Customers change. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.
臨機応変 teaches us not to become prisoners of our own plans.
This does not mean changing direction every time something becomes difficult. Nor does it mean abandoning your principles. It means understanding the difference between your goal and your method.
The goal may remain the same while the method must change.
This is especially important in business. Companies often continue doing something simply because, “This is how we have always done it.” But experience should not become an excuse for refusing to adapt.
A good leader watches what is happening, accepts reality, and adjusts.
Change your approach when necessary. Change your tools when better ones become available. Change your plans when the environment changes.
Keep your purpose. Adapt your methods.
That is 臨機応変.
Survival does not always belong to the strongest or the largest. Often, it belongs to those who recognize change—and know how to respond to it.
