Tanegashima: From the Sea to Space
Tanegashima (種子島) is a small island south of Kyushu, but few places in Japan connect the country’s technological past and future so dramatically.

In 1543, Portuguese traders arrived at Tanegashima carrying something Japan had never seen before: matchlock firearms.

Japanese craftsmen studied the weapon, learned how it worked, and began producing their own. The firearm became so closely associated with the island that the word tanegashima (種子島) itself became another name for the matchlock gun in Japan.

The new weapon arrived during the Sengoku period, when rival warlords were fighting for control of the country. Firearms quickly changed Japanese warfare and became an important part of the military technology of the era.

More than four centuries later, Tanegashima again became a gateway for new technology—but this time in the opposite direction.

The Tanegashima Space Center (種子島宇宙センター) opened in 1969. Today, it is Japan’s major launch site for large rockets, including the H3.

There is something remarkable about this history.

In 1543, technology arrived at Tanegashima from across the sea.

Today, technology departs Tanegashima for space.

Five centuries ago, people on the island looked toward the ocean and saw ships bringing technology from another world.

Today, people look toward the sky and watch Japanese rockets carry technology toward other worlds.

From the sea to space.
From the matchlock to the rocket.

Tanegashima is more than an island.

It is a fascinating symbol of Japan’s technological journey.
