When Hollywood Changes the Story

When Hollywood Changes the Story

When Hollywood adapts Japanese stories such as Ghost in the Shell (攻殻機動隊) or Godzilla (ゴジラ), the changes often go beyond the language and actors. Sometimes, the meaning of the story changes too.

The 1995 animated Ghost in the Shell explores consciousness, identity, and what it means to be human. The 2017 Hollywood adaptation places more emphasis on uncovering the heroine’s past and reclaiming her identity. To me, that changes the central question from “What am I?” to “Who was I?”

The original 1954 Godzilla carries Japan’s fear of nuclear destruction. Some American adaptations shift the emphasis toward spectacle and monster battles, changing the weight of that historical message.

Japanese filmmakers also reinterpret their own stories. Change itself is not the problem.

But I wonder: if a story is powerful enough to attract Hollywood’s attention, shouldn’t the ideas that made it powerful deserve as much care as its visual appearance?

Perhaps this also helps explain why many Western anime fans prefer watching in Japanese with subtitles. They want to hear the original voices and experience the story closer to how its creators intended. That desire may also be encouraging more fans to learn Japanese.

I want to see the story cross the ocean with its soul intact.
