The Lost Art of 近所付き合い
In Japanese, 近所付き合い (kinjo-zukiai) means maintaining relationships with your neighbors.
It can be as simple as saying good morning, sharing something you brought home from a trip, or noticing that someone might need a hand. These small gestures turn people who live nearby into people who know one another.
Yet it is easy to live next door to someone for years without knowing their name. We can communicate instantly with people across the world while barely speaking to the person across the street.
Of course, neighborly relationships require consideration. Some people want privacy. Nobody wants every conversation to become an obligation or every neighbor to know their personal business.
But there is room between being strangers and being involved in everything.
A greeting. A short conversation. A small act of kindness without expecting anything in return.
That is where 近所付き合い begins.
When something goes wrong, knowing someone nearby can make a difference. And even when nothing is wrong, it is comforting to be recognized and welcomed where you live.
Perhaps the lost art of neighborly connection begins with something we can still do today:
Look up, smile, and say hello.
