What You See Is Not What You Get. Really?

In Japanese, suppin(すっぴん) means a face without makeup. It is how someone looks before adding the finishing touches.

I wonder what a business would look like in suppin.

Remove the polished website, impressive advertising, carefully written slogans, and beautiful brochures. What is underneath?

Marketing helps a company get noticed. There is nothing wrong with presenting your business well. But when that presentation hides poor service, unreliable products, or a lack of expertise, it becomes a problem.

A company can say, “Customers come first.” But what happens when a customer calls with a problem? Does someone answer? Does anyone take responsibility? Does the problem get fixed?

That is where you see the company’s real face.

At PSPINC, I want our marketing to reflect what we actually do. If we make a promise, we need the people, technology, and commitment to deliver it.

A polished presentation may bring a customer through the door. The experience afterward gives that customer a reason to stay—or leave.

Before spending more money making a business look better, perhaps we should ask whether it works better.

What does your business look like when the makeup comes off?

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.

Your comments are always welcome.
