Nothing Lasts Forever
The Japanese words 干満 (kanman) describe the rising and falling of the tide: the sea comes in, then goes out. It is a natural rhythm, repeating day after day.
Life has its own tides. Difficult times can feel as if they will never end, but they eventually change. Good times change, too. Nothing bad lasts forever, and nothing good lasts forever.
That may sound discouraging, but I find it comforting. When life is hard, remembering that circumstances can change helps me keep going. When life is good, remembering that it will not last forever reminds me to appreciate it while it is here.
The tide does not stay high or low. It moves. Life does the same.
