The Japanese Word for “Shop” Means “A Place to Show”

The Japanese word 店 (みせ, mise) means “shop” or “store.” It can also be written 見世. Its history is connected to 見世棚 (みせだな, misedana), a shelf or display where goods were arranged for customers to see. The word 店 (みせ) is thought to be a shortened form of 見世棚.

 

The kanji 見 means “to see,” which helps bring out the image behind the word: a place where goods are displayed for people to look at. 見世 is another way to write mise, though it is more accurate to say the word is thought to come from 見世棚, rather than to say that 見世 alone was its original form.

 

The word 見世 was also used in the pleasure districts of Edo, including Yoshiwara. 張見世 (はりみせ, harimise)referred to the room behind a lattice facing the street, where courtesans sat as customers passed by. The word described a place where they could be seen.

 

The same word was used for a shop displaying goods and for a room where courtesans waited in view of passersby. The settings were very different, but both uses carry the idea of presenting something—or someone—to be seen. In the case of Yoshiwara, that image also points to the difficult and unequal realities of life in the pleasure district.
