Why I’m Calling It a Rental Service

For years, the technology industry has used the term SaaS—Software as a Service. It makes sense to people in the industry. But when I talk with business owners, I wonder whether the term helps them understand what they are buying.

 

Here is what is in my head: PSPINC should start calling it a rental service.

 

When you rent an office, you use the space to run your business. You do not have to buy the building or maintain every system inside it. I think software can work the same way. You use an application to get a job done, while PSPINC takes care of its operation, maintenance, and updates.

 

This is especially useful for a business that has outgrown a spreadsheet but is not ready to invest in a large software system. It can start with the tools it needs today and change them as the business grows.

 

“SaaS” describes a technology business model. “Rental service” describes the experience I want our customers to have: useful software, available when they need it, with people they know standing behind it.

 

That is the direction I want PSPINC to take.
