Gikushaku Suru — When Things No Longer Move Smoothly

 

The Japanese expression “ギクシャクする” (gikushaku suru) describes something that no longer moves or works smoothly.

 

It can describe physical movement. For example, a machine may move awkwardly because its parts are not working together properly. However, the expression is more commonly used to describe human relationships and communication.

 

After an argument, two people may continue speaking, but their conversation feels uncomfortable and unnatural. They hesitate, choose their words too carefully, and avoid looking directly at each other. Their relationship has become “gikushaku.”

 

The same thing can happen in business. Departments may stop sharing information. Managers and employees may become overly cautious. Meetings may continue, but honest communication disappears. Nothing is completely broken, yet everything feels stiff and inefficient.

 

This is what makes “gikushaku” dangerous. Because work is still being done, leaders may overlook the problem. However, small misunderstandings and unspoken frustrations can gradually grow.

 

When a machine begins moving awkwardly, we inspect it before it breaks. Human relationships deserve the same attention. A sincere conversation, an apology, or a simple clarification may provide the oil needed to make things move smoothly again.
