Exactly where should the water spray?
When TOTO was developing the Washlet, there was no database containing the information engineers needed. You could not simply look up the ideal position, angle, pressure, and range.
So TOTO created its own data.
Employees reportedly participated in experiments, marking on paper where the water should reach. Engineers collected the results, measured the differences between people, and used that information to determine the most effective spray position.
This is where the real innovation lesson begins.
Innovation is not simply inventing something new. It is having the determination to solve a problem even when the information needed to solve it does not yet exist.
Many companies stop when market research provides no answer. Innovators create the research. They experiment, measure, fail, adjust, and measure again.
TOTO introduced the Washlet in 1980. Today, what once seemed unusual has become an ordinary part of life in Japan.
That may be the greatest achievement of innovation:
Creating something so useful that eventually people forget they ever lived without it.
