Regret Wants to Change the Past. Reflection Wants to Change the Future.
We all make mistakes. We say things we should not have said, make decisions that turn out badly, or miss opportunities we wish we had taken.

 

What happens afterward is what matters.

 

When we regret something, our mind often tries to rewrite the past. We think, “I should have done this,” or “I wish I had done that.” We replay the moment again and again, imagining a different result. But no matter how much we think about it, yesterday will remain exactly as it was.

 

Reflection also looks at the past, but for a different reason. Instead of wishing we could change what happened, we try to learn from it. Why did I make that decision? What could I have done differently? What should I do the next time I face a similar situation?

 

Regret and reflection may begin with the same mistake, but they look in opposite directions.

 

Regret looks backward and wishes for a different yesterday. Reflection looks backward only long enough to create a better tomorrow.

 

We cannot change what has already happened, but we can change what happens next.
