Nagori — What Remains After Something Is Gone
Japanese has a beautiful word: 名残 (nagori).
 
Nagori describes something that remains after something else has ended or disappeared. But it is not simply a physical remainder. It often carries emotion.
 
When a wonderful trip is ending, you may feel 名残惜しい (nagorioshii) — you know it is time to leave, but part of you wishes the moment could continue.
 
We also use nagori for seasons. 名残の桜 can describe the last cherry blossoms remaining as spring moves on. 名残雪 is snow that falls when winter is almost over.
 
What makes nagori beautiful is that it recognizes the presence of something through its disappearance.
 
A person leaves, but the conversation remains in your mind. A season ends, but a few flowers remain. A good time is over, but the feeling does not immediately disappear.
 
English has words such as “lingering,” “remnant,” and “afterglow,” but none perfectly captures every meaning of nagori.
 
Perhaps some things become more precious precisely because they are leaving.
 
That feeling has a name in Japanese: 名残.
