Same Characters, Different Order: 礼儀 and 儀礼
Japanese has two interesting words: 礼儀 (reigi) and 儀礼 (girei).
Japanese has two interesting words: 礼儀 (reigi) and 儀礼 (girei).
What makes them especially interesting is that they use exactly the same two kanji—礼 and 儀—but in reverse order. Yet their meanings are quite different.
礼儀 means manners, courtesy, or etiquette. It describes how we show respect and consideration toward other people. Greeting someone properly, listening without interrupting, being punctual, and choosing respectful words are all examples of reigi.
儀礼, on the other hand, means ritual, ceremony, or formal protocol. A wedding, funeral, religious ceremony, company event, or traditional procedure may involve girei. It is more about following an established form or process.
The difference may seem small, but I think it is important.
You can follow every ritual perfectly and still be rude. That is 儀礼 without 礼儀.
At the same time, you may not know the proper ritual or customs, but if you sincerely respect the people around you, you can still have good 礼儀.
Same characters. Different order. Different meaning.
Perhaps the simplest distinction is this:
礼儀 is about respecting people.
儀礼 is about respecting form.
