The Island Mentality

 

Japanese has an interesting expression: 島国根性 (shimaguni konjo), literally “island-country mentality.”

 

Japan is an island nation that developed for centuries with relatively limited interaction with the outside world. Because of this history, Japanese society developed strong internal customs, rules, and ways of thinking.

 

Shimaguni konjo describes the negative side of that environment.

 

It refers to an insular mentality: being suspicious of outsiders, resisting unfamiliar ideas, and placing too much importance on belonging to the group. The expression can also describe jealousy or criticism toward people who stand out or succeed beyond the group.

 

Interestingly, English has a similar expression: “island mentality” or “insular thinking.” The word “insular” itself comes from the Latin word for island, insula.

 

This mentality may also help explain why immigration remains a sensitive issue in Japan. Even as the government has gradually opened the country to more foreign workers in response to labor shortages and an aging population, there is still resistance among some Japanese people to accepting large numbers of immigrants. The distinction between “inside” and “outside” remains culturally powerful.

 

Of course, living on an island does not automatically create this mentality, and Japan is far more connected to the world today.

 

But every organization can become an “island.” A company, industry, community, or even a country can develop its own rules and stop listening to outsiders.

 

Sometimes the most dangerous ocean is not the one surrounding us.

 

It is the one we create in our minds.
