This Scene Looks Strange to Japanese People. Do You Know Why?
You have probably seen this scene in American TV shows and movies.
Several people are sitting together, eating Chinese takeout. Each person is holding a small takeout box and eating directly from it with chopsticks or a fork.
To most Americans, there is probably nothing unusual about this scene.
But to many Japanese people, it looks a little strange.
Why?
In Japan, when several people eat together, food is often shared. If we ordered several Chinese dishes, we would probably open all the containers, put them in the middle of the table, and divide the food onto individual plates.
The same thing often happens with Italian food, Chinese food, Japanese food, and many other cuisines. We order different dishes partly because everyone can try a little of everything.
In America, there seems to be a stronger idea that “this is what I ordered, so this is my food.” One container can represent one person’s meal.
Neither way is better or worse. They simply reflect different eating cultures.
Sometimes the smallest scenes in television reveal surprisingly large cultural differences.
