The Japanese word 染まる (somaru) literally means “to be dyed” or “to become colored.” We normally think about fabric absorbing color, but Japanese also uses this word to describe people.
When someone spends enough time in a company, community, country, or group, that person may gradually begin to think and behave like the people around them.
For example, Japanese might say:
「会社の色に染まる。」
“To become colored by the company.”
“To become colored by the company.”
This does not necessarily mean someone is forced to change. In fact, the interesting part of 染まる is that the change often happens naturally, without the person noticing it.
A new employee learns how people communicate and make decisions. Someone living overseas begins adopting local customs. A person surrounded by ambitious people may become more ambitious. The opposite can happen as well.
We are all influenced by our surroundings more than we may realize.
That influence can be positive or negative. A good environment can help us grow, while a bad one can slowly change us in ways we may not recognize.
Perhaps the question is not whether we are being colored.
The question is: Do we like the color we are becoming?
