It All Comes Back to Sound
Yamaha began with sound.

 

In 1887, Torakusu Yamaha repaired a broken organ and decided to build one himself. His first attempt failed because the tuning was poor. Instead of giving up, he studied music, tuning, and the precision required to produce the right sound.

 

That pursuit of sound led Yamaha into precision manufacturing.

 

The skills developed for musical instruments eventually helped Yamaha manufacture aircraft propellers. Working with propellers required even greater precision in machining, materials, and engineering. Those capabilities later contributed to Yamaha’s expansion into motorcycles and engines.

 

And somehow, it all came back to sound.

 

Yamaha motorcycles became known not only for their performance, but also for the character of their engines and exhaust notes. Yamaha also contributed engineering expertise to automobile engines, including some famous Toyota performance cars.

 

The progression is fascinating:

 

Sound → Instruments → Precision → Propellers → Engines → Sound

 

Yamaha did not begin with a grand plan to manufacture motorcycles or work on automobile engines. It began with one man trying to understand why his organ did not sound right.

 

Perhaps that is why the three tuning forks remain the perfect Yamaha symbol.

 

More than a century later, Yamaha is still pursuing the perfect sound.
