The Best Earthquake Preparation Is Science
Japan cannot prevent earthquakes. But it has learned how to use science to get a small head start.
When an earthquake occurs, two important seismic waves travel through the ground: the P-wave and the S-wave.
The P-wave travels faster and arrives first, usually producing relatively small initial vibrations. The S-wave travels more slowly but generally produces much stronger shaking.
That difference in speed is extremely valuable.
Japan's Earthquake Early Warning system detects the faster P-wave near the earthquake's source. Computers immediately analyze the data and estimate where the earthquake occurred, its magnitude, and where strong shaking is likely to arrive.
Sometimes in Japan, your smartphone will suddenly sound an earthquake alert and may even show a countdown indicating how many seconds remain before strong shaking is expected to reach your area.
Japan's railways use the same basic principle. Shinkansen earthquake systems can detect the initial seismic waves, cut electrical power, and trigger emergency braking before the strongest shaking arrives.
A few seconds may not sound like much.
But a few seconds can stop a train, shut down machinery, control an elevator, or give someone time to protect themselves.
You cannot stop an earthquake.
But science can give you time—and sometimes, time saves lives.
