Why Does Japan Have So Many Characters?

 

Japan has characters everywhere.

 

Cities and prefectures have mascots. Government departments have characters. Police and fire departments have them. Companies, railways, sports teams, and even public-service campaigns use characters to communicate with people. Then, of course, there is Japan’s enormous world of anime and manga.

 

Some are known worldwide: Hello Kitty, Pikachu, Doraemon, Totoro, and Anpanman. Others represent specific places or organizations, such as Hikonyan in Hikone, the Suica Penguin for JR East, Pipo-kun for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, and Doala for the Chunichi Dragons.

 

Perhaps the most successful regional mascot is Kumamon (くまモン), created by Kumamoto Prefecture.

 

Why are characters so effective in Japan?

 

A character can make an organization feel more approachable. Government information can seem bureaucratic, but a friendly mascot makes it easier to notice and remember. A city name may be forgotten, while its character stays in your mind.

 

Kumamon took this idea even further. By allowing approved businesses to use the character without traditional licensing royalties, Kumamoto helped Kumamon spread almost everywhere.

 

There is a business lesson here.

 

People may forget your advertisement.

 

But they may remember your character.
