火事場の馬鹿力 (Kajiba no Bakajikara)
Strength You Never Knew You Had

 

火事場の馬鹿力 (kajiba no bakajikara) literally means “extraordinary strength at the scene of a fire.” It describes the surprising physical or mental power that can appear during an emergency, when there is no time to think or hesitate.

 

You may have heard stories of someone suddenly lifting an extremely heavy object to rescue a person trapped underneath. Some of you may have even witnessed something like this yourselves. In extraordinary circumstances, people can sometimes do things they never imagined they were capable of doing.

 

The same phenomenon appears in business.

 

A server crashes. A major customer has an emergency. A critical deadline suddenly moves forward. When failure is not an option, people often become more focused, creative, and decisive. A team that normally needs weeks may accomplish something in days.

 

But constantly creating emergencies is not good management.

 

The business lesson of kajiba no bakajikara is to recognize that we often have more ability than we think. Pressure can reveal that hidden capacity.
