Sales Means Being Your Customer’s Advocate

A salesperson should be more than someone who sells products or services. You should be your customer’s advocate—and you should do it at no charge.

Your customer does not pay you to represent them. Your company does. But your responsibility is to understand what the customer is trying to accomplish and help them make the best decision.

Sometimes that means recommending your own product. Sometimes it means telling them they do not need something. You may even have to tell them that another solution is better.

That may sound like a bad way to make a sale, but sales should not be measured by one transaction.

When customers know that you are looking out for their interests, they begin to trust you. They call you before making decisions. They ask for your opinion. Eventually, you become more than a salesperson. You become part of their team.

Selling is not about getting customers to buy.

It is about standing on their side of the table.

A good salesperson represents the company.

A great salesperson represents the customer.

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I was born and raised in Japan and have spent most of my adult life in the United States. Through this blog, I share Japanese culture, language, expressions, and wisdom. My goal is not to say one culture is better, but to explore different perspectives and what we can learn from them.

Your comments are always welcome.
