Nothing Should Be Perfect
At Nikkō Tōshō-gū in Japan stands Yōmeimon (陽明門), one of the most beautifully decorated gates in the country. It is so elaborate that you could spend hours looking at its carvings and details.
But there is something unusual about it.
One of the pillars is intentionally installed with its decorative pattern upside down. It is known as the 逆柱 (sakasabashira), the “upside-down pillar.”
Why would craftsmen deliberately leave an imperfection in such a magnificent structure?
There is an old Japanese belief that when something becomes completely perfect, its decline begins. By leaving one imperfection, the building remains unfinished—and therefore still has somewhere to go.
I like this philosophy.
Today, we often try to make everything perfect: our products, businesses, designs, careers, and even ourselves. But perfection can leave no room for improvement.
A small imperfection reminds us that there is always another step ahead.
Perhaps the goal should not be perfection.
The goal should be to keep improving.
