Crossing the Hardest Point
峠を越える (tōge o koeru) literally means “to cross a mountain pass.” A 峠 (tōge) is the highest point along a mountain road before the road begins to descend.
In Japanese, the expression is also used when someone has passed the most difficult or dangerous stage of a situation.
It is often used for illness. When someone survives the critical stage and begins to recover, we may say 病気の峠を越えた—“they are through the worst of it.”
The same idea applies to business and life. Completing a difficult project, surviving a crisis, overcoming a serious problem, or making it through a difficult period can all be described as crossing a 峠.
But crossing the hardest point does not mean the journey is finished. There may be another mountain ahead.
