Yaoyorozu (八百万) — You Are Always Being Watched
In Japan, there is an ancient idea called yaoyorozu no kami (八百万の神), meaning that countless gods or spirits can be found throughout the world around us.
A god may be in a mountain, a river, a tree, a rock, or even in ordinary things we use every day. The number “eight million” is not meant literally. Yaoyorozu simply means countless or everywhere.
This idea creates an interesting way of looking at life: you are never completely alone.
Even when no other person is watching, something may be watching.
Perhaps that is one reason Japanese culture traditionally emphasizes taking care of things, respecting nature, keeping shared spaces clean, and behaving properly even when nobody is there to praise or criticize you.
It is not necessarily about being afraid of gods.
It is about remembering that your actions matter even when nobody seems to be watching.
In the world of yaoyorozu, there may always be someone—or something—watching.
