The Man Who Made a Japanese Sports Car the World Recognized

Today, Japanese sports cars are respected around the world. But in the 1960s, Japan was not yet a country people associated with exciting sports cars.

Yutaka Katayama wanted to change that.

Known as “Mr. K,” Katayama helped build Datsun in the United States. He believed a sports car did not have to be expensive or luxurious. It should be affordable, reliable, easy to maintain, and—most importantly—fun to drive.

That philosophy helped shape the Datsun 240Z, introduced in America for the 1970 model year.

With its long hood, short rear deck, six-cylinder engine, attractive price, and strong performance, the 240Z challenged the idea that a serious sports car had to come from Europe.

The Z became an enormous success. The first-generation Z sold more than 520,000 units worldwide, establishing itself as one of the great sports-car success stories of its era.

Katayama did more than help create a successful automobile.

He helped prove that Japan could build a sports car the world would recognize, desire, and respect.

That car was the Datsun 240Z.

And behind it was a man everyone simply called Mr. K.
