Kamikaze (神風)

 

How the Meaning of One Word Changed Through History
The Japanese word kamikaze (神風) literally means "divine wind." Today, many people associate it with the suicide pilots of World War II, but that was not its original meaning.

 

The name dates back to the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281. Kublai Khan's massive fleets attempted to conquer Japan, but powerful typhoons struck the invasion forces, destroying many of their ships. The Japanese believed these storms were sent by the gods to protect the nation and called them kamikaze—the divine wind.

 

More than six centuries later, during the final stages of World War II, Japan revived the name. The Tokubetsu Kōgekitai (Special Attack Units) became known around the world as the Kamikaze. This time, however, the word no longer referred to a miraculous wind. It symbolized young pilots who deliberately crashed their aircraft into enemy ships in the hope of changing the course of the war.

 

Today, the term has taken on yet another meaning. News reports often describe loitering munitions as "kamikaze drones." Unlike the pilots of World War II, these weapons have no human on board. They search for targets and destroy themselves upon impact, sometimes under remote control and increasingly with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

 

It is fascinating to see how the meaning of a single word has evolved over the centuries. Kamikaze once represented divine protection, later came to symbolize human sacrifice, and today often refers to autonomous technology. The history of this word reminds us that language evolves alongside society, technology, and the changing nature of warfare.
