同情 (Dōjō)
Sharing Another Person's Feelings

 

The Japanese word 同情 (dōjō) is often translated as sympathy, but the translation does not fully capture its meaning.

 

The first character, 同 (dō), means the same or together. The second character, 情 (jō), means feelings or emotion. Together, they literally mean sharing the same feelings.

 

In English, sympathy often means feeling sorry for someone. It can imply emotional distance—you recognize another person's suffering and express concern. Dōjō goes a step further. It is the willingness to stand beside someone emotionally, sharing their burden as if, for a moment, it were your own.

 

In business, this distinction matters. Customers are not looking only for products or services. They want to know that you understand their frustrations, concerns, and hopes. Leaders who practice dōjō listen before they speak. They seek to understand before offering solutions.

 

True compassion is not pity.

 

It is the ability to feel with another person.

 

When people know you genuinely share their feelings, trust grows naturally.

 

Sympathy may acknowledge another person's pain.

 

Dōjō invites you to carry a small part of it together.
