The Kimono Shop That Never Had a Sale
Long before department stores existed, a kimono merchant in Edo quietly changed the way people shopped.
In 1673, the Mitsui family opened Echigoya (越後屋), a kimono store in Nihonbashi. At the time, most merchants negotiated prices with each customer, sold primarily on credit to samurai, and often delivered goods to their homes. Shopping was slow, personal, and inconsistent.
Echigoya introduced a remarkably modern idea: fixed prices with no bargaining.
Its motto was "Genkin Kakene Nashi" (現金掛け値なし)—"Cash, No Inflated Prices." Every customer paid the same fair price. There were no secret discounts, no special deals, and no need to negotiate. The price was the price.
This was revolutionary.
Customers quickly learned they could trust the store. They no longer had to wonder whether someone else had received a better price. Instead of attracting buyers with sales promotions, Echigoya earned loyalty through honesty, quality, and consistency.
The business continued to grow and eventually became Mitsukoshi (三越), one of Japan's most famous department stores.
The lesson is as relevant today as it was more than 350 years ago.
Many businesses believe discounts are the fastest way to win customers. Sometimes they are. But constantly lowering prices can also teach customers to wait for the next sale instead of appreciating the product's true value.
Companies that consistently deliver quality, stand behind their products, and treat every customer fairly build something far more valuable than short-term sales—they build trust.
Trust cannot be discounted.
Once earned, it becomes one of the strongest competitive advantages a business can have.
