Shitsuke (躾): The Beauty of Character

 

Among the many Japanese words that have no perfect English equivalent, shitsuke (躾) is one of the most important. It is often translated as "discipline" or "upbringing," but its meaning is much deeper.

 

Unlike skills that we teach ourselves, shitsuke is something passed down from others. It begins with parents, continues through teachers, is reinforced by senior colleagues, and is modeled by mentors. It is the process by which one generation shapes the character of the next.

 

The kanji itself tells a beautiful story. The left side is 身 (mi), meaning "body" or "oneself." The right side is 美 (bi), meaning "beauty." Put together, the character represents making oneself beautiful—not through appearance, but through behavior, manners, respect, and self-control.

 

This character was created in Japan rather than inherited from ancient Chinese writing, making it one of the uniquely Japanese kanji (国字, kokuji). That fact reflects how highly Japanese culture values proper conduct and social responsibility.

 

Shitsuke is not about strict punishment or blind obedience. It is about learning how to live with others. Saying "please" and "thank you," arriving on time, respecting elders, listening before speaking, and taking responsibility for your actions are all expressions of shitsuke. These habits become part of a person's character.

 

In business, technical ability may get someone hired, but shitsuke often determines who earns trust, becomes a leader, and builds lasting relationships. Companies can teach procedures, but character is much harder to develop.

 

The beauty of shitsuke is that it is invisible. You cannot wear it, buy it, or display it. Yet people recognize it immediately through your actions. In Japan, true beauty is often measured not by how a person looks, but by how a person behaves.
