The Power Behind the Scenes – 縁の下の力持ち (En no Shita no Chikaramochi)

Every successful person, company, or project has someone working behind the scenes. In Japanese, that person is called en no shita no chikaramochi (縁の下の力持ち), literally "the strong person beneath the floor." It describes someone whose strength is not measured by public recognition, but by the support they quietly provide to others.

 

In traditional Japanese houses, the floor was raised above the ground. The strength of the home depended not on what people could see, but on the beams and pillars underneath. In the same way, organizations rely on people whose names may never appear in headlines. Administrators, assistants, engineers, accountants, technicians, and countless others make success possible without seeking attention.

 

Many people focus on becoming the visible leader. Yet lasting success often depends on identifying the invisible leaders—the people who solve problems, earn trust, connect people, and quietly influence important decisions. Titles do not always reveal where real influence resides.

 

Experienced businesspeople understand this. Before trying to persuade an organization, they learn who others rely on, who people consult before making decisions, and who keeps everything moving. Building genuine relationships with these individuals is often more valuable than spending all your effort on those at the top of the organizational chart.

 

The Japanese saying reminds us that the strongest foundations are often hidden from view. So are many of the people who make success possible.
