為すべきことを為せ

Do What You Can Do

One piece of advice has guided successful people for generations:

"Do What You Can Do."

Many people spend enormous amounts of time worrying about things they cannot control—other people's opinions, politics, the economy, or unexpected events. Worrying about these things rarely changes the outcome. It only consumes time and energy that could be used more productively.

Instead, focus on what is within your control.

Do the work that has been entrusted to you. Fulfill your responsibilities. Improve your skills. Help the people around you. When you concentrate on the things you can actually influence, your efforts begin to produce real results.

This does not mean ignoring problems or pretending difficulties do not exist. It means recognizing the difference between what you can change and what you cannot. Wisdom is knowing where to invest your time and energy.

In Japanese, there is an expression that captures this mindset:

「為すべきことを為せ」
(Nasu beki koto o nase.)

It simply means, "Do what ought to be done."

It is a reminder to stop wasting energy on things beyond your control and instead take action where your actions matter. Whether in business or in life, progress comes from consistently doing the work that is yours to do—not from worrying about everything else.

The next time you find yourself anxious about circumstances you cannot control, pause and ask yourself one simple question:

"What is the next thing I can do?"

Then do it.
