Don't Ask for Trouble: The Japanese Expression 「藪蛇 (Yabuhebi)」

 

Have you ever heard the English expressions "Don't look for trouble" or "Don't ask for trouble"? They carry the same basic idea as the Japanese expression 藪蛇 (Yabuhebi).

 

Literally, 藪 (yabu) means "a bush" or "thicket," and 蛇 (hebi) means "snake." The saying comes from the image of someone poking around in a bush for no good reason, only to scare out a snake that then bites them.

 

The lesson is simple: don't create problems that didn't exist in the first place.

 

In business, this often happens when someone keeps digging into a minor issue, asks unnecessary questions, or stirs up an old conflict that everyone had already forgotten. Instead of solving a problem, they create a much bigger one.

 

Of course, this doesn't mean we should ignore real problems. It simply reminds us to use good judgment. Not every situation needs to be challenged, and not every question needs to be asked.

 

Sometimes, the wisest decision is knowing when to leave well enough alone.
