Japan's Only Airborne Brigade—and Its First Female Paratrooper

When people think of elite airborne forces, they often picture the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division or Britain's Parachute Regiment. Few realize that Japan also has an elite parachute unit: the 1st Airborne Brigade (第1空挺団) of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

 

The 1st Airborne Brigade is Japan's only airborne brigade. Based at Camp Narashino in Chiba Prefecture, it is trained to deploy rapidly by parachute into areas where immediate action is required. Because of its demanding physical standards and specialized training, it is considered one of the most elite units in the JGSDF.

 

In 2020, the brigade reached another historic milestone. Sergeant Reina Hashiba (橋場麗奈) became the first woman to successfully complete the Airborne Training Unit's basic parachute course and join the 1st Airborne Brigade. This achievement came after restrictions on women serving in the unit were removed in 2017, although the standards remained exactly the same for every candidate.

 

The training is far from easy. Trainees carry approximately 60 kilograms (132 pounds) of equipment—including a parachute, reserve parachute, and rifle—and complete multiple parachute jumps from military aircraft. Only those who meet the brigade's demanding physical and mental requirements earn the coveted airborne wings.

 

After completing the course, Sergeant Hashiba said that joining the brigade had been her dream since childhood. Rather than viewing herself as having reached the finish line, she described it as "the start line" of her career as a paratrooper, pledging to continue improving her skills, strength, and discipline.

 

Her achievement was not simply a milestone for women in Japan's Self-Defense Forces—it demonstrated that excellence is measured by meeting the standard, not by gender. It is a reminder that dedication, perseverance, and discipline can open doors that once seemed impossible.
