Ego Narrowing: When Success Becomes a Trap
One interesting Japanese expression is jiga kyōsaku (自我狭窄), which can be translated as "ego narrowing."

 

It describes a person whose thinking becomes increasingly confined by their own beliefs. They become convinced they are always right, stop listening to others, and reject ideas that challenge their views.

 

This often happens after repeated success. Confidence slowly turns into overconfidence, and eventually into arrogance. Instead of seeing more possibilities, a person sees fewer. Their world becomes smaller because only their own opinion matters.

 

In business, ego narrowing can be dangerous. A leader who ignores employees, customers, or market changes may continue making decisions based only on past successes. History is filled with companies that failed not because they lacked talent, but because their leaders stopped listening.

 

Strong leaders are not those who always have the answers. They are the ones who keep asking questions, welcome different perspectives, and remain open to learning.

 

A narrow ego creates a narrow future.

 

The most successful people are often those humble enough to admit they might be wrong.
