Stubborn or Strong-Willed? The Japanese Word 「頑固 (Ganko)」
The Japanese word 頑固 (ganko) is often translated as stubborn, but its meaning is more nuanced than that.

 

The first character, 頑, means firm, obstinate, or unyielding. The second character, 固, means solid, hard, or fixed. Together, they describe someone whose beliefs or way of thinking are difficult to change.

 

In everyday conversation, ganko is usually used in a negative way. A ganko person refuses advice, ignores new ideas, and insists that only their own opinion is correct. In business, this kind of stubbornness can prevent innovation and damage teamwork.

 

However, ganko can also have a positive side. Someone who refuses to compromise on honesty, quality, or personal principles may also be described as ganko. A craftsman who insists on doing things the right way, even when it takes longer, or a business leader who stands firm against unethical pressure can earn respect because of that determination.

 

The key difference is what you refuse to change.

 

If you reject better ideas simply because they are different, stubbornness becomes a weakness. But if you remain faithful to your values while staying open to learning and improvement, that same firmness becomes strength.

 

In business and in life, the goal is not to be stubborn for the sake of being stubborn. Instead, be unwavering in your principles, but flexible in your methods.
