Did You Know the Original Meaning of "Gochisousama"?

Many people who visit Japan quickly learn two expressions: "Itadakimasu" before a meal and "Gochisousama" after a meal.

 

Most people assume "Gochisousama" simply means, "Thank you for the meal." But its original meaning is much deeper.

 

The word chisou (馳走) literally means "to run around." In the past, there were no supermarkets or convenience stores. Preparing a meal meant traveling from place to place to gather fresh ingredients from farms, mountains, rivers, or markets. It often required considerable time and effort.

 

When you say "Gochisousama," you are thanking the person who "ran around" to prepare the meal. The honorific "go" and respectful "sama" add appreciation and respect, turning the phrase into an expression of sincere gratitude.

 

Today, the phrase extends beyond the cook. It is a thank-you to everyone involved—the farmers, fishermen, transporters, shopkeepers, and even to nature itself for providing the food.
