You’ve Heard of a Free Drink with Your Meal… How About a Free Breakfast with Your Coffee?
If you've traveled in Japan, you've probably noticed that many restaurants offer a free drink when you order a meal.
If you've traveled in Japan, you've probably noticed that many restaurants offer a free drink when you order a meal.
But what if I told you that in one part of Japan, you can order just a cup of coffee and receive breakfast for free?
Welcome to Japan's famous Morning Service (モーニングサービス).
The tradition began in Aichi Prefecture, especially around Nagoya, during the 1950s. At the time, local coffee shops (kissaten) were popular meeting places for businesspeople. To thank their loyal morning customers, café owners started serving a slice of buttered toast along with the coffee—at no extra charge.
Soon, one café added a boiled egg. Another added jam. Others included a small salad or yogurt. Before long, friendly competition turned Morning Service into a local tradition.
Today, many cafés in the Nagoya area still include free toast and a boiled egg with a morning coffee. Some go even further, offering sandwiches, soup, salad, fruit, or even mini desserts—all included in the price of the coffee.
Unlike a discounted breakfast combo found elsewhere, Morning Service isn't really about selling breakfast. It's about rewarding customers for stopping by and creating a welcoming place where people can relax, read the newspaper, or meet friends before starting the day.
It is one of those uniquely Japanese customs that quietly reflects the country's approach to hospitality—not by making a grand gesture, but by giving customers a little more than they expected.
So, the next time you're in Japan—especially around Nagoya—order a cup of coffee in the morning.
You might just get breakfast with it.
