About the Black Belt 黒帯

 

In traditional Japanese martial arts such as judo and karate, there are essentially two main belt categories: white and black.

 

You are either mudansha (無段者)—someone who has not yet earned a dan rank and wears a white belt—or yūdansha (有段者)—someone who has earned a dan rank and wears a black belt.

 

In addition, there is no special belt color or uniform that distinguishes a first-degree black belt, shodan (初段), from a fifth-degree black belt, godan (五段). They all wear the same black belt and the same uniform. You cannot determine someone’s exact rank simply by looking at the color of the belt.

 

Perhaps the only visible clue is how worn the belt has become. A faded, frayed black belt may suggest that the person has trained for many years. Even then, the condition of the belt does not officially indicate rank or ability. The best way to judge someone is by watching how they move, how they practice, and how they treat others.

 

The many colored belts seen in the United States and other countries were introduced to show intermediate progress and provide students with more frequent goals and recognition.

 

Perhaps people in the United States need more encouragement, visible rewards, and praise from others. Traditional Japanese judo and karate were not created for that purpose. The training itself is the reward. Progress is demonstrated through discipline, ability, character, and continued practice—not by collecting different-colored belts.

 

A black belt does not mean that someone has mastered everything. It simply means that the student has learned the fundamentals and is ready to begin more serious training.
