What Happens When You Overlay Tokyo's Modern Rail Map on an Edo-Era Map?
I recently had an interesting idea.

 

What would Tokyo look like if you placed today's JR and Tokyo Metro rail network on top of a map from the Edo period?

 

The result is fascinating.

 

At the center of the old map sits Edo Castle, now the Imperial Palace. More than 400 years later, that same area remains the heart of Japan. Tokyo Station, Otemachi, Nihonbashi, and Kanda are still among the country's most important business and government districts.

 

The overlay also highlights just how much Tokyo has changed. Many of today's railway lines run through areas that were once part of Tokyo Bay or undeveloped marshland. The waterfront districts, in particular, are almost unrecognizable compared to their Edo-period appearance.

 

One of the most interesting observations is the Yamanote Line. Although it wasn't designed to follow the old city limits, it forms a ring around what was once the historic core of Edo, illustrating how the city gradually expanded outward over time.

 

This comparison reminds us that modern cities are built upon layers of history. Streets, neighborhoods, and transportation networks often reflect decisions made centuries ago, even as technology and society evolve.

 

Sometimes the best way to understand a city isn't by reading a history book—it's by comparing old maps with new ones. Tokyo's past is still visible beneath its modern skyline, if you know where to look.
