What Does “Mie wo Haru” Mean?
There is a Japanese expression:

 

見栄を張る
Mie wo haru

 

It means trying to make yourself look more successful, wealthy, important, or capable than you really are.

 

The word mie comes from the idea of how something “looks” to others. Haru means to stretch, display, or put forward. Together, the phrase describes the act of presenting an inflated image of yourself.

 

For example, someone may buy an expensive car they cannot afford, exaggerate their position, or speak as if they are number one even when there is little substance behind the claim.

 

In Japan, this kind of behavior is often viewed negatively. Japanese culture traditionally places value on substance, ability, craftsmanship, and quiet achievement. People are expected to prove themselves through actions rather than words.

 

Of course, Japanese people also care about appearances. However, when appearance becomes more important than reality, it is called mie wo haru.

 

There is an important difference between looking successful and actually being successful. A strong image may attract attention for a while, but eventually, people will see what is really inside.
