Another Meaning of “I Give Up”
When Japanese people say, 「あきらめます」 (akirame-masu), it is often translated into English as “I give up.”

 

However, the Japanese expression can carry a meaning that is slightly different from the English phrase.

 

In English, “I give up” often sounds like defeat. It may suggest that someone has failed, lost confidence, or no longer wants to continue trying.

 

In Japanese, akirameru can also mean accepting reality and letting go.

 

For example, imagine that you want to attend an event, purchase something, or arrange a meeting, but it becomes clear that it will not be possible. A Japanese person might say:

 

“Then, I will give up.”

 

This does not necessarily mean, “I have been defeated.” It may mean:

 

“I understand the situation.”

 

“I will accept that it cannot happen.”

 

“I will stop asking and quietly move on.”

 

There is also an interesting connection between akirameru and the older word akirameru, written with characters meaning “to make something clear.” In this sense, giving up begins with seeing the situation clearly.

 

Sometimes continuing to fight is important. But there are also times when accepting reality is the wiser choice.

 

In Japanese culture, saying “I will give up” can be a polite way to end a discussion without blaming the other person. It allows both sides to move forward without unnecessary conflict.

 

So, akirameru is not always surrender.

 

Sometimes it means understanding, accepting, and letting go with dignity.
